Breve biografia di Samuel Richardson(a short biography of Samuel Richardson):
Samuel Richardson(a Puritan) was born in 1689 in Derbyshire into a lower middle-class family. He moved to London quite young, and there started working as a printer. In 1740 he published “Pamela”, an epistolary novel about a young servant girl who is persecuted by her master, a young nobleman. The book was immensely successful. He married the daughter of the owner of a shop, and so se he became the owner(he inherited the business). At the age of 50, he had the idea of publishing a collection on sample letters(such as letters for parents, friends, lovers, curriculum vitae, submission letters to find a job, letter about celebration, to announce baptism, marriage, death, births, parties, or letters for familiar occasions, for asking favours, for thanking. The collection of sample letters was necessary because a lot of people found difficult to write, they were semi-educated(practical education). They will be constantly published(popular books). England had a very well organization in this field. He died in London in 1761. He had the idea of writing stories, epistolary novels, such as “Le ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis” by Foscolo, “The Persian letters” by Montesquieu: here there is the estrangement of the point of view. Richardson was an innovative writer of the 18th century, he introduced a new genre: the epistolary novel, in which the attention is focused on the emotion of the protagonists. We are in a domestic sphere, while, up now, novels were only about general aspects of society, politics, journey.
