“Robinson Crusoe” is considered the 1st modern novel. In this novel a shipwrecked sailor on a desert island is described. It is based on a real story(situation), of a Scotch sailor, called Alexander Selkirk who from October 1704 to February 1709 had managed to survive alone on the island of Juan Fernandez, in South America. When Selkirk was finally rescued, his adventures were reported on by many magazines. Middle class people, also gentlemen, wanted to read about real situations. They found it interesting. Literature was important also for Puritans: they read books in the evening, and they went to the pub to read it. Aristocracy didn’t appreciate this novel, for the rudimentary life. This story is very similar to a diary, and the style is very simple.
